An Artists' Gathering The American Artist Show, bracing for its ninth year this June, is a labor of love with a fun-charged atmosphere that seems more like a well-organized social gathering than a strict business venture. For the exhibitors, the event provides an opportunity for showing off their latest creations, catching up on the work of fellow artists, and making some new friends in the crowd. Show organizers Bryce and Linda Ritter are the first to admit that an element of stress is associated with managing the details of any eagerly anticipated event. But once the gate opens, the American Artists Show takes on a life of its own, and all one can do is go with the flow. The secret to this
show's success, the Ritters say, lies in careful advance planning and
promotionand in accepting that there will be things completely out
of their control. Some artists may arrive late; rain clouds may roll overhead.
Don't let that ruin the day. The lesson they've learned: Focus on the details you can do something about. Once dates and a good mix of exhibitors are picked, promote the show by word of mouth and regional advertising, and then join in the fun! For those who attend, the American Artists Show provides not only a chance to shop and spend a glorious day outdoors but to make a personal connection with artists whose craftsmanship they admire, and sometimes even watch them at work. Each bed frame, birdhouse, yellowware mug, hand-painted game boar, or saddle-stitched lampshade for sale at this small-scale show is exhibited by the artist who made it. This year's show takes place June 8, noon to 6 p.m., and June 9, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. |
